When Less Equals More: Exploring Salary Flexibility for UK Skilled Worker Visas

Introducing a flexible salary scheme for skilled workers, the UK government aims to attract top talent with fair compensation. Workers may receive 70% to 90% of the standard rate, ensuring a minimum annual income of £30,960. Eligibility criteria include being under 26, listed on the immigration salary index, holding a STEM doctoral degree, or occupying a postdoctoral position in science or higher education.

Immigration Salary List:

The immigration salary list features skilled occupations with reduced salary requirements, entailing a lower visa application fee. Job sponsors must ensure a minimum annual salary of £30,960, though the standard going rate for the job must still be met.

Under 26, studying or a recent graduate, or in professional training:

Skilled workers earning at least £30,960 annually may receive 70% of their job’s standard going rate if they meet these criteria:

  • Under 26 years old.
  • Currently in the UK on a Student or Graduate visa, pursuing further education or professional qualifications.
  • However, their total stay in the UK, including time on a Graduate visa, is capped at 4 years.

Have a PhD level qualification that’s relevant to their job:

Eligible for a PhD salary discount, individuals with STEM qualifications can receive 80% of the standard rate, and those with non-STEM qualifications can receive 90%. However, this is contingent upon earning at least £30,960 or £34,830 annually, respectively. Key requirements include holding a UK or equivalent overseas PhD and demonstrating qualification relevance to the job, confirmed by the employer.

Additionally, research or academic leaders can apply for the Global Talent Visa, which has no language or minimum salary requirements

Have a postdoctoral position in science or higher education:

Postdoctoral workers in specific scientific or higher education roles may receive 70% of the standard rate. Eligible occupations include specific job codes.
